
Unwanted noise and vibration are a constant nuisance in modern engineering, particularly when it comes to low-frequency sound. Our CEO and co-founder, Rhona Togher, recently joined Jonathan Taylor on Composites Weekly to discuss how Lios is tackling this issue with a new approach to material design.
During the conversation, Rhona explained why traditional acoustic insulation falls short. Heavy, bulky materials have long been the default for damping noise, but they are increasingly impractical for industries prioritising lightweight, efficient design. Our technology, SoundBounce, offers a direct solution. By pairing a responsive material with a custom cellular structure, it absorbs stubborn low frequencies without adding unnecessary mass.
Rhona and Jonathan also covered the mechanics behind SoundBounce, typical engineering trade-offs, and the practical demands of bringing a deep-tech material from the lab to commercial applications. A highlight of the discussion was our ongoing work with the European Space Agency (ESA). Through ESA’s Future Launchers Preparatory Programme, we are validating SoundBounce to protect sensitive spacecraft payloads from the extreme acoustic vibrations generated during launch – a harsh testing ground that drives performance improvements across our industrial, aerospace, and construction applications.
